Health care decisions are often intimidating and overwhelming. What primary care doctor should you go to? Should you request a visit with a specialist? What can you be doing in your day-to-day life to optimize your health and wellness? And how can you know if you’re ever making the right call? 

My years-long journey through the health care system began when I was 21 and diagnosed with an incurable chronic condition. From all outward appearances, I was a typical, healthy twenty-something – but I’d receive two more such diagnoses before I turned 30. 

As I’m not a medical professional, I found myself to do a lot of Googling to help me understand what my doctors and surgeons were saying. 

Thankfully, experience navigating the health care system has largely been a positive one. I’ve been lucky to encounter many wonderful practitioners. Still, the journey has been confusing, frustrating and often scary. And for many, the experience for them is sadly far from positive. 

For more than a decade, I’ve had to teach myself how to find the right health care practitioners, conduct responsible research, educate myself and advocate for myself. It’s not been an easy process, but it’s been more than worthwhile. 

One of the reasons I became a full-time health care writer is because it’s a real, effective way to bridge the gap between the healthcare systems and the people trying to navigate them.

It’s also the reason I started this blog. I don’t want to be the only person who benefits from my experience. I’m excited to be able to share information and resources that can help you on your own journey.
